Blog - Howard Clayton - Leeds vs Exeter

10 April 2010

And so we register our first competitive win for Season 2010 by 6 Wickets in a low-scoring, typical early-season affair. But, to paraphrase Rabbie Burns – “A win’s a win for a` that” This was Exeter`s second day only on grass after a heavy defeat against Somerset 2nd XI two days previously. It was the 11th day of competition for Leeds-Bradford, after the South African sojourn.

Richard Browning continued his happy habit of winning the toss and asked Exeter to bat first. The home side began at almost 3 runs an over, led by Northamptonshire’s Ben Howgego. But gradually, the bowlers gained the upper hand as the rate slipped nearer and nearer to just over 2 runs per over by the end of the innings

James Hawley1
James Hawley - Electric in the field!
All the bowlers took wickets, with the exception of Bradley Kruger but he gave nothing away in 7 tight overs. James Hawley excelled in the field with a stunning catch and two assists for run-outs And would undoubtedly have won a Club Fielding Point or 2, had such an award existed !!!

The Leeds-Bradford reply began slowly but was picking up nicely when two LBW decisions went against us and 30-0 soon became 33-2. Alex Blake played as only he can and the game suddenly looked very easy. A couple more wickets never really tipped the balance away from Leeds-Bradford and 19 from what became the final over sealed the win.

Alan Burton spent some useful time in the middle and secured a red-inker and Rick Moore decided to take the slow outfield out of the equation by hitting the winning shot with a maximum. He has been quite a find for us in 2010.
