Leeds/Bradford MCC Universities wicket-keeper, Dan Hodgson, has signed a summer contract with Yorkshire for the 2012 season.

Following a series of strong performances behind the stumps and at the crease for Yorkshire II in the Second Eleven Championship towards the end of this season, third year Sport and Exercise Science student, Hodgson, is now looking forward to making Headingley his home ground next year.

Leeds/Bradford MCCU Head Coach, Andrew Lawson, said he was delighted with 21-year-old Hodgson's progress as a cricketer during his time at university:

“Dan had a consistent season for us with the bat and his glove-work was absolutely superb throughout the summer," said Lawson.

“Yorkshire have always liked the look of him as a player, and after giving him a chance to play in their second eleven at the end of this season, it is fantastic news that Dan has now secured a summer contract with them next year."

Breeding ground

Hodgson's signing follows on from fellow Leeds/Bradford student Tom Craddock's successful trial period with Essex - which led to the leg-spinner earning a two-year deal.

Lawson added: "We are delighted with Dan’s progression so far, which alongside Tom Craddock’s contract with Essex this season, demonstrates exactly how the MCCU scheme really does work.”

Lawson and the rest of the Leeds/Bradford MCCU support staff will now work closely with the Yorkshire coaches during the winter to ensure that Hodsgson continues to develop.

The elevation of Yorkshire’s current first-choice wicket-keeper, Jonny Bairstow, to the England set-up could potentially see Hodgson making his first-class debut with the county next season.
