Day One
After the victory against Sussex last week the MCCU students were brought back to earth during the first hour of play against Essex today.
Captain Jak Martin (Oxford) might have been ruing the decision to bat after winning the toss. Ex-Cambridge MCCU bowler Tony Palladino was particularly effective under overcast skies, he moved the ball both ways from a good length. Within the first hour the students had been reduced to 59 for four wickets. The dismissal of Craig Park (Cambridge) for 12 brought the total to 90 for five. Park was almost immediately followed back to the dressing room by Cambridge team-mate Jivan Lotay, with the score 90 for 6.
Fortunately for the students Duncan Bradshaw (Oxford) and Rob Taylor (Loughborough) batted very sensibly and took the score onto 230 before Taylor was caught at point off the Essex off-spinner Austin. Bradshaw fell to the off-spinner ten overs later for 91. He was stumped by current the current Cambridge MCCU keeper, Adam Wheater.
The students were eventually dismissed for 264 when tea was taken. After the break the students bowled well with Turnbull (Cambridge) and Wilson (Leeds) both finding the shape that the county had found. Unfortunately however they could not find the wicket taking deliveries that Essex had found. Pete Turnbull had a couple of close LBW shouts, and the MCCU could also rue two dropped catches when the game recommences in the morning.
